Sport is an integral part of life at Solway College - shaping character, confidence, and connection across every year level.
Our sports programme is built on participation, pride, and performance, offering every student the opportunity to develop skills, leadership, and teamwork in a supportive and inspiring environment.
As part of our special character, all Solway girls are expected to participate in at least one competitive sport each year. Engaging in sport not only fosters teamwork, resilience, and school pride but also supports physical and mental wellbeing, helping girls develop healthy habits that encourage a lifelong love of being active.
From local competitions to national tournaments, Solway students represent the College with commitment and integrity.
We value the lessons learned through sport - resilience, reliability, and respect and celebrate effort as much as achievement.
Each term offers a wide range of sporting opportunities, from traditional codes such as hockey, netball, and equestrian, to fast-growing activities including archery, volleyball, dragon boating, touch rugby and waka ama.
Our students are also encouraged to take on new challenges through leadership workshops and tailored experiences designed to grow confidence, develop coaches and officials, and explore pathways in sport beyond the field of play.
Our teams are supported by dedicated staff, coaches, and whānau who foster a strong sense of community spirit.
Through inter-house competitions, exchanges, and regional events, Solway girls learn what it means to compete with heart and to celebrate both individual and collective success.
At Solway College, sport isn’t just something we do - it’s part of who we are.
keeping our girls in sport
Solway College offers a wide range of sports and physical activities to suit every student’s interest and ability.
From team sports, to recreational activities — there are opportunities for skill development, competition, and fun all year round.
In addition to these seasonal options, our whole-school participation events such as Founders Day swimming sports, athletics, cross country, and the lively House Tug of War — celebrate our whānau environment, teamwork, and school spirit, ensuring every girl is involved in the joy and challenge of being active.
Tuesday Period 6 is our dedicated Tākaro Tima (formally known as Tuesday Sports Time) where students take part in selected sports trainings and recreational activities. These include a range of summer and winter sport options, such as hockey training at Clareville Turf, archery, yoga, walking, swimming, gym fitness and outdoor volleyball. This dedicated time ensures our girls are able to engage in physical activity and wellbeing-focused experiences within the school day.
Our grounds offer a wide range of facilities, including a 25-metre inground swimming pool, cricket pitch with bowling net, football field, outdoor archery area, sports hall, indoor volleyball, outdoor volleyball courts, fitness and weights rooms, four netball courts, three tennis courts, trampolines, portable basketball hoops, and a new obstacle course currently under construction.
Our beautiful park like grounds and facilities provide ample space for all students to participate in sporting and recreational activities on site, both during and after school.
